Research and Study : The Work of a Neuropsychologist

A neuropsychologist is a scientist who specializes in research, testing and treatment related to the relationship between behavior and the brain. Neuropsychologists often perform tests on patients to determine if they suffer from brain injuries, both as part of a treatment plan and in order to testify as expert witnesses in court. Many neuropsychologists are also involved in research to learn more about how the functioning of the brain influences behavior in humans.

Neuropsychologists are doctors of psychology, not medicine. Their field of study overlaps in some areas with the science of neurology and psychiatry. Some of the areas in which neuropsychologists conduct testing and research include studies related to memory, attention span and concentration, reasoning ability and the brain’s control of the body through motor function.

Neuropsychologists often work in fields such as academia, performing research studies to learn more about the way the brain functions and how various injuries affect the brain. Research neuropsychologists perform their work in laboratories where they conduct studies to determine what effect various things have on individual’s behavior.

Some neuropsychologists work in clinics or hospitals where they treat patients who have experienced trauma to the brain as a result of an illness or injury. They work with these patients to develop a treatment program that will enable the patient to lead a full life.

A day in the life of a neuropsychologist usually involves testing, whether the neuropsychologist is working with patients or in a research laboratory. Neuropsychology is a scientific study, and its main focus is on testing to determine relationships between the brain and behavior.

Some of the tests frequently used by neuropsychologists include the Halstead-Reitan Battery and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised. Patients are often tested not only for intelligence IQ, but also verbal and performance IQs. This gives the neuropsychologist a better idea of whether any brain injuries exist as different areas of the brain are responsible for different things, so testing for cognitive intelligence only is not enough to get a clear picture of what is going on inside the brain.

The average salary for a neuropsychologist is between $70,000 and $80,000 per year. This is a highly specialized career area with only a handful of practitioners compared to other careers in psychology. According to the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology (ABCN), there were only 641 board certified clinical neuropsychologists throughout the US, Canada and Mexico as of May 2008.

Those who wish to pursue neuropsychology as a career should earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, pre-med or biology and then continue on to complete a doctoral degree in psychology. Following completion of the doctoral program, a residency or internship may be required before the student is ready to gain employment as a neuropsychologist. Although certification with ABCN is not required by law to enter into a career in neuropsychology, many prospective employers require applicants to be certified.

How To Start A Career In Social Work

Over 600,000 social workers strive every day to make a positive impact on the lives of others. If you’re passionate about helping individuals, families, organizations, and communities, a career in social work might be right for you. Social workers find themselves helping people from all walks of life in a variety of atmospheres from schools to hospitals to prisons to nursing homes and handle casework, policy analysis, research, counseling, and teaching. They deal with issues such as poverty, abuse, addiction, unemployment, death, divorce, and physical illness. If a career switch to social work appeals to you, following is a brief background of social work basics and how to make a smooth transition.

Career Outlook: According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the social work profession is expected to grow by 30% by 2010 and is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations through 2014.

Median Annual Earnings for Social Workers (U.S., 2004)

• Child, Family, And School Social Workers: $34,820
• Medical And Public Health Social Workers: $40,080
• Mental Health And Substance Abuse Social Workers: $33,920
• All Other Social Workers: $39,440

Education Requirements: All social workers must have a bachelors (BSW), masters (MSW), or doctoral degree (DSW or Ph.D.) and complete a predetermined number of hours in supervised fieldwork. Social workers also have to graduate from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The CSWE reports that in 2004 there were 442 BSW programs and 168 MSW programs. While some people work with only a BSW, career options are more limited, so the MSW or DSW is more common.

• BSW: Accredited BSW programs typically take four years to complete and require 400 hours of supervised field experience. With a BSW, a graduate can work in an entry-level position, such as a caseworker.

• MSW: An MSW requires two years of study and has a prerequisite of an undergraduate degree in social work, psychology, or a similar field. An MSW allows a social worker to work in a clinical setting to diagnose and treat psychological problems.

• DSW: A doctoral degree takes anywhere from 4-7 years. A DSW has extensive training in therapy and research and is qualified to teach in a university setting.

If you lack the educational or professional background, an associate’s degree may be a good place to start to see if you’re willing to make the necessary educational commitment.

For information regarding accredited social work programs, visit the Council on Social Work Education’s website: www.cswe.org

Licensing and Exams: Social workers must be licensed. For licensing purposes, each state has its own requirements, but an MSW is usually a minimum. In addition, licensing requires 2 years or 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience.

After completing school and hour requirements, social work candidates must pass an exam. The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) develops and maintains four categories of social work licensure examinations: Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical. Candidates should check with individual boards to find out which examinations are appropriate for the jurisdiction where they want to be licensed.

According to the ASWB’s website:

“Each examination contains 170 four-option multiple choice questions designed to measure minimum competencies at four categories of practice. Only 150 of the 170 items are scored; the remaining 20 questions are “pretest” items included to measure their effectiveness as items on future examinations. These pretest items are scattered randomly throughout the examination. Candidates have four hours to complete the test, which is administered electronically.”

For information on state licensing requirements, see the Association of Social Work Boards website: http://www.aswb.org/education/boards/

For information on exams, visit http://www.aswb.org/exam_info.shtml

Continuing Education: As part of renewing licenses every two years, almost all states require continuing education (CE) courses. Each state’s CE requirements vary in number of hours and approved courses, so be sure to check with the board over your jurisdiction to make sure you are in compliance with CE requirements. Many courses are available online, at sites such as www.speedyceus.com, which save time and money.

Types of Licenses: There are several different kinds of licenses available:
L.C.S.W. (or A.C.S.W., L.C.S., L.I.C.S.W., C.S.W.)

The licensed clinical social worker has a graduate academic degree, has completed supervised clinical work experience and has passed a national- or state-certified licensing exam. This advanced practitioner holds a license that allows him or her to receive health-care insurance reimbursements. (National Association of Social Workers)

SSW: School social work is a specialized area of practice within the broad field of the social work profession. School social workers bring unique knowledge and skills to the school system and the student services team. School social workers are instrumental in furthering the purpose of the schools: to provide a setting for teaching, learning, and for the attainment of competence and confidence. School social workers are hired by school districts to enhance the district’s ability to meet its academic mission, especially where home, school and community collaboration is the key to achieving that mission. (School Social Work Association of America)

Other specialties and certifications, offered by the National Association of Social Workers, include:

• Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW)
• Qualified Clinical Social Worker (QCSW)
• Diplomate in Clinical Social Work (DCSW)
• Certified Clinical Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Social Worker (C-CATODSW)
• Certified Advanced Children, Youth, and Family Social Worker (C-ACYFSW)
• Certified Children, Youth, and Family Social Worker (C-CYFSW)
• Certified Advanced Social Work Case Manager (C-ASWCM)
• Certified Social Work Case Manager (C-SWCM)
• Certified Social Worker in Health Care (C-SWHC)

Does Hypnosis Work For Weight Loss?

Hypnosis conjures up images of a bearded man with piercing black eyes and a mesmerizing deep voice swinging a pendulum back and forth, chanting, “You are getting very sleeeeepy.” Hypnosis is terribly misunderstood and the only exposure to hypnosis most people will ever have is a Las Vegas stage show. But stage hypnosis for entertainment and hypnotherapy for behavior change are completely different animals. Could “real” hypnotherapy help you get leaner?

I’ve wondered the same thing myself for decades, since I first started bodybuilding.

In the late 1980′s, Dr. Judd Biasiotto published numerous books about the mind in sports including one called, “Hypnotize Me And Make Me Great.”

That 70-page book, which has long since gone out of print (but still holds a hallowed place on my shelf), was one of the books that sparked my interest in mind power and hypnosis.

In case you’re not familiar with strength sports, Dr. Judd is the guy who squatted 605 pounds at a body weight of 132 pounds – a staggering feat, as any powerlifter will tell you. When a world class lifter who also holds a PhD in sports psychology says there’s something to hypnosis, and that his mental training regimen was instrumental in his success, a teenage wannabe bodybuilder, desperate for muscle, listens!

All these years later, my interest in hypnosis and the powers of the mind have never waned. I’ve used self hypnosis as well as hypnosis CD’s, which were directed at improving performance in the gym, generating maximum intensity during workouts and pushing through the pain barrier. While I don’t see hypnosis as anything magical, I do believe it has been helpful. I also believe that a comprehensive mental training program, which may include hypnosis, can make or break your weight loss program success and give athletes a competitive advantage.

Any seasoned coach can tell you that which diet or training program you follow is irrelevant if you can’t follow it consistently. Many of the problems such as non-compliance, self-sabotage, inconsistency and lack of motivation are mind problems, not body problems.

One misconception about hypnosis is the fear that you’ll lose command of your faculties during a session or that it’s some kind of “mind control.” This is not true to any greater degree than your family, friends, peers or culture have “controlled” your mind.

The fact is, the mind is amenable to suggestion, (especially the mind of a very young child), and in that sense everything is hypnosis. Reading the newspaper or watching TV is hypnosis or “mental programming” in one sense. You get “programmed” by societal norms to become one of the masses, unless you make a choice to be different and become what you want to be.

Another source of misconceptions about hypnosis comes from stage hypnosis, which has virtually nothing to do with hypnotherapy for personal change. The stage hypnotist intentionally ferrets out the most susceptible individuals in his audience – who happen to be willing participants – and then induces some hypnotic phenomenon for entertainment value.

Hypnosis, as used in personal change work, is simply a relaxed state of altered consciousness and heightened focus where the conscious mind gets out of the way, allowing a message from the hypnotherapist to reach your subconscious more easily. When your subconscious gets the message, it stimulates positive behaviors, so hypnosis is simply a tool for behavior change.

Self hypnosis (by yourself), is as simple as taking long, deep breaths, getting relaxed (sometimes using progressive muscle relaxation techniques), then doing your visualization or repeating affirmations, or even listening to your own home-made affirmations tape.

Many people report great success with hypnosis, but others do not. The mixed results probably have to do with the practitioner, and some with the subject. What kind of results can you expect from hypnosis? Could hypnosis help you lose weight or change your body in other ways?

I believe that there is a mind-body link and that it’s entirely possible that the brain, central nervous system and subconscious mind can literally “talk” to the various cells of your body and that this may be a factor in healing from illnesses. I believe that the body is a remarkable self-healing machine and its own natural pharmacy.

I think it’s pretty difficult to prove, but being that a legitimate science exists on this subject (it’s called psychoneuroimmunology), the scientific community seems to think enough of the mind-body connection to spend time, money and resources to formally investigate it. There are many exciting and plausible theories. We also have the placebo effect to consider, where a belief can affect biology in truly amazing ways.

That said, when it comes to hypnosis, I think you should view it with an eye of caution as well as interest. First and foremost, and perhaps exclusively, you should see hypnosis as a tool to change behavior. When you look at a claim made for hypnosis, you should ask yourself whether that claim is a result that can be achieved through a change in your behavior.

For example, if someone promotes hypnosis for muscle growth, is it possible that your behavior might change in a way that you gain more muscle? The answer is yes. The hypnosis might help you change your eating habits, and you might just push yourself harder in the gym. Therefore, the muscle growth occurs as a result of behavior change – eating better and training harder – rather than the hypnosis itself.

It’s the same with body fat reduction: Will hypnosis magically increase your metabolism from a mind body connection? While I like to keep an open mind, I seriously doubt it and I’m not too enthused about hypnotherapists who say they will hypnotize you and your metabolism will speed up. If it can happen, I’m not sure it will ever be provable using the scientific method, so it may ultimately come down to your will to believe the claims.

So, could hypnosis help with breast enlargement? Well, maybe. A thought might bubble up from your subconscious mind that it’s a good idea to save up your money, go visit the doctor, and fork over the three grand for implants (sarcasm intended).

Guys, I could give the same warning about hypnosis for enlargement of your…. uh… your amount of hair… yeah, hair growth, that’s it… watch out for those hair growth hypnosis claims. I’m not so sure I believe them (grin).

What about weight loss?

Although the results are not definitive, there’s some clinical psychology research that’s been published in peer reviewed journals which shows successful results from hypnosis for weight loss. In part 2 of this series, you’ll hear more about what those studies found.

Even more eye-opening in my view are some of the documented cases of medical hypnosis, which range from simple pain relief from dental work to surgery without anesthesia (which is pretty freaky if you think about it). The mind does affect the body.

In my opinion, hypnosis sessions or hypnosis CD’s can be a valuable adjunct to a comprehensive fitness, nutrition and lifestyle program for some people, if you get them from a reputable and skilled hypnotherapist.

Even better, I believe the ideal type of session would include conscious coaching and education as well as traditional hypnosis, not just a passive situation where you listen and expect your mind to be positively “programmed.”

Then again, I think this is why weight loss hypnosis CDs sell like gangbusters, because they’re often sold under the pretense that you do absolutely nothing. Just listen and get slim – the perfect “quick fix.”

I don’t think it’s that simple or easy. You have to accept responsibility for change, take an active role in creating change and have a bias for action if you really want to be successful. You have to work on the physical and mental plane simultaneously not just “think positive” or rely on self help CD’s of any kind.

So while I DO believe hypnosis can be a valuable tool, at the end of the day, programming your mind for success all boils down to what you say to yourself (and see/read/listen to), most of the time. You can’t work with a hypnotherapist every day for the rest of your life, but you do talk to yourself non stop every single day, and repetition is a proven way to condition the mind.

The way you talk to yourself, most of the time, IS “hypnosis” if you think about it… it’s self-hypnosis.

If you already have a structured training and nutrition plan, but you’re having challenges with the behavior change side of things, I hypnosis or positive mental programming CD’s might be worth trying as an additional tool in your “mental training” took kit.

Just remember that in the long run, you are your own best hypnotherapist and when it comes to the claims, let the buyer beware.

Know the Work of Nurses Before You Become One

“What do you do for a living?” This question gets to the nitty gritty of our jobs. It goes beyond the job title. It goes beyond the salary. It even goes beyond the “job description.” When people ask this question, it gets to the heart of our job. For example, an incident manager might reply, “I contact people who know what they are doing, and then I ask them what they are doing.” Likewise, if you are considering becoming a nurse, then you should have a clear sense of what the job entails. Here are some key elements:

1. Nursing is flexible

Nurses have one of the most flexible occupations in the world. Think about it this way: every person in the world has health, thus they need healthcare services. If you are a breathing human, then you can get sick. Typically, we imagine nurses working in hospitals. However, they can labor in several different environments, including:

•    hospitals
•    doctors’ offices
•    home care places
•    nursing homes
•    occupational places
•    schools
•    government agencies
•    clinics
•    retirement communities

Many nurses appreciate the flexible hours that they enjoy, as nurses. This allows them to keep a balance between their professional and personal lives.

2. Nursing can be demanding

On the other hand, the demand for nurses has become increasingly high, with about 6% of nursing positions being yet unfilled. This can place a strain at some healthcare facilities, requiring nurses to work overtime or even double shifts.

Furthermore, in certain situations, nurses need to provide patient care 24 hours a day, and seven days a week. Fortunately, certain methods can help nurses to cope with the situation. For instance, scrubs such as cheap landau scrubs provide nurses with attire that is lightweight, comfortable, and hygienic. Nevertheless, providing around-the-clock nursing care for a patient can place a huge strain on the nurses themselves. This can result in both physical and emotional stress.

3. Nursing provides a solid salary and benefits

How much do nurse earn? According to official studies of the US government, RNs’ median yearly earnings are about $52,000 (2004). During that year, RNs salaries ranged from about $37,000, to about $74,800. Those RNs working in emergency departments, and those with their own nursing practice, earned up to $90,000! Finally, several employers of nurses provide the workers with benefits such as bonuses, educational benefits, and childcare.

4. Nursing involves education and training

Education and training are vital in the field of nursing. All nurses must earn a nursing license, before they can practice in any state, as a nurse. Afterwards, nurses may renew their license. They can also hold licenses in multiple states. Finally, RNs can earn an associates’, bachelors’ or masters’ degree in nursing, opening the doors for salary raises and promotions.

What is the world of nursing REALLY like? The aforementioned aspects include a few of the most important features of nurses’ work, such wearing scrubs. Before knowing that you want to be a nurse, know what you would do!

Purpose of the Article

The purpose of this article is to establish some basic functions of the doctoral dissertation advisor. Hopefully, the suggestions will help others in the doctoral advisement process.

Basic Functions of the Doctoral Dissertation Advisor

The following suggestions are functions of a doctoral dissertation advisor:

1.      Keep a folder for each doctoral student. This will give you the opportunity to review previous and current work completed by the student. It will give you the opportunity to review your own comments. Reviewing the folder periodically enables you to firmly grasp the student’s concerns with conducting research.

2.      Keep track of emails that you send and other correspondence. Make certain that you communicate to students frequently. Not communicating with doctoral students is condescending and shows disrespect.

3.      Establish a personal, but professional relationship with your doctoral student advisees. Being a mentor is a very serious responsibility. See each of your students first as people. They have goals and aspirations just as you do.

4.      Develop your own style in dissertation advising. The best way to develop your own style is simply by doing it.

5.      Be positive in working with doctoral students on their dissertation. Make certain to provide feedback that is constructive and useful. Always strive to be positive and enthusiastic in working with doctoral students on their dissertations. Be cheerful, optimistic, and helpful. Direct advisees to relevant sources of information.

6.      Know your strengths, attributes, weaknesses, and limitations.

7.      Do you homework in working with each advisee. Make certain to study the dissertation topic your advisee is interested in developing.

8.      Think about your own dissertation experience. Avoid any mistakes that were made. Incorporate effective strategies that work.

9.      Encourage advisees to document what they want to do as a dissertation topic.

10.  Strive to make a difference as an advisor to your advisee. Model appropriate behavior.

11.  Make your presence matter in the life of the doctoral student.

12.  Accept the responsibility of doing a good job.

13.  Accept the fact you know more about writing a dissertation than your advisee.

14.  As an advisor, recognize the time when the dissertation topic must be revised or changed. Do not be afraid to tell an advisee when they are wasting time on something that will not work or is not relevant.

15.  Be ready to suggest to your advisee the need to shift the research time to other areas of the dissertation if you see the advisee bog down.

16.  Do not hesitate to tell the advisee to put more effort into the dissertation.

17.  Make certain to realize as an advisor there are many different strategies for writing a doctoral dissertation.

18.  Encourage doctoral students to talk with others who are writing their dissertation. They often can provide practical feedback and encouragement.

19.  Encourage doctoral students to communicate with others in different colleges or departments who are writing their dissertation.

20.  Encourage advisees to explore ideas beyond your suggestions.

21.  Tell your advisees how you like to work with them. If you need to work from an outline – tell the advisee. Let advisees know your own work habits.

22.  Remember, it is the advisee’s dissertation – not yours. They must do the work.

23.  If you are an inexperienced dissertation advisor, try to work with a colleague who has successful experience. As an advisor, you are there to help. Help as much as you possibly can.

24.  Be supportive of the advisee’s work. Use specific examples in telling advisees their work is good or not acceptable. Point out where the work needs improvement.

25.  Make certain you develop the habit of getting things back to students in a timely manner; hopefully, within five – ten business days. Through being diligent in your efforts, the advisee will keep focused. Read dissertation chapters at your earliest convenience. Do not let too much time elapse. Remember, you are a busy person and so is your advisee. Establish timelines with the advisee and meet them.

26.  Give your doctoral students the responsibility of meeting deadlines.

27.  Encourage students to contact you if you have taken too long to respond to them.

28.  As an advisor, give lots of suggestions. Be specific, exact, concise, detailed, and comprehensive in all aspects of your advising.

29.  Encourage your doctoral students to talk with their committee members throughout the entire process. Other committee members might suggest different approaches or a new study altogether. When this happens, meet with the advisee. Perhaps you will agree or disagree. Keep the dialogue open and positive.

30.  It is your duty to encourage your advisees to do the work that must be done to have a quality and professionally satisfying dissertation.

31.  Be available. If this means meeting with a doctoral student at a location other than the university, do it. Some advisees need a lot of attention, guidance, and direction. Others are self-directive. Be flexible and adaptable.

32.  The advisee should not hear major changes for the first time at the proposal defense.

33.  In giving guidance to your advisees, constantly prepare them for their proposal defense and ultimately defending their dissertation. This will keep them focused.

34.  Do not take on the job of advisor if you do not intend to make it a priority. Dissertation advisement takes an enormous amount of time and commitment. During the entire process, it will be necessary for you to meet with the other members of the dissertation committee to discuss the progress of the doctoral student.

35.  You want your students to tell you “I like the way you are always available, keep up the good work.”

36.  The doctoral student and advisor should consult someone other than the student’s committee members for special advising or expertise.

37.  Help your advisee when there is a need to clarify the dissertation topic.

38.  Try to obtain adequate funding for your advisee’s research.

39.  Link students with similar dissertation topics together.

40.  During the advisement process, dissertation advisors should mentor students by helping them to prepare manuscripts for publication in national, refereed, peer reviewed journals.

41.  Consider or recommend doctoral students for university responsibilities, such as facilitating classes when professors are unavailable, and giving examinations at distance learning facilities. This gives them experiences in higher education.

42.  Involve doctoral students with coordinating orientation sessions for new students.

43.  As a dissertation advisor, develop an approval form for both the proposal and dissertation defense that must be signed by all committee members prior to scheduling a formal meeting. By doing so, the committee members agree the student is ready to present and defend.
